So, you’ve got that itch to write a web novel—awesome! You’ve overcome the first step of your journey. But now comes the first big question: What genre should you write?

It might seem like a simple decision at first. You prepare to write your masterpiece and plan to just go with what you love. Everything is good to go—and write. Right? Well, yes… and no. The genre you choose can affect your success, your audience, and even your motivation to keep going

No pressure?!

This is until you get to work. But don’t worry—I’ve got your back. Let’s break this process down in a fun—and totally stress-free—way.

1. What Do You Really Enjoy Reading?

Let’s start with the obvious question: what’s your favorite book and what is its genre? Here is one question to keep in mind, always, when picking what to write about.

Here’s the thing, if you don’t enjoy reading a genre, you probably won’t enjoy writing it either. Picture this—you decide to write a cyberpunk thriller because it’s the trendy thing to write, but you secretly hate futuristic tech and neon-lit cities.

Yikes!

Now, imagine spending months writing about a world that doesn’t excite you. Sounds miserable, right? Instead, think about the stories that lift you up and inspire you. The ones you devour at 2 AM because you have to know what happens next.

That’s the energy you want to bring into your writing.

2. What’s Hot vs. What’s Timeless?

Let’s be real—trends come and go.

Remember when vampire romance ruled the world? And then suddenly it was all about dystopian societies? At some point viking romances were the hot topic, and nowadays, isekai is the ‘it thing.’ Yeah, trends are wild.

While it’s tempting to chase what’s popular right now, trends can snuff out fast. Instead, consider a genre that blends timeless appeal with a fresh twist. Think fantasy, romance, mystery, and sci-fi—genres that always have a loyal fanbase, but with room for creativity.

💡 Pro tip: If you want to ride a trend, make sure you actually love it so you’ll still enjoy writing it long after the hype fades.

3. Who’s Your Ideal Reader?

Close your eyes and picture the kind of person who’d be obsessed with your web novel. Are they:

  • A hopeless romantic who wants all the feels? (Romance)
  • A mystery lover who thrives on twists and suspense? (Thriller/Mystery)
  • A fantasy nerd who lives for an intricate world building? (Fantasy)
  • A sci-fi enthusiast who dreams of the future? (Science Fiction)

Your ideal reader matters because they’re the ones who will keep coming back for every update and episode—these are your followers, your tribe. If you write something that excites them, they’ll become your biggest fans. And trust me, having passionate readers cheering you on? That’s priceless and elating.

4. Do You Have the Stamina for This Genre?

Some genres require more world building, research, or long-term storytelling than others. If you want to write an epic fantasy, be ready to create entire civilizations, magic systems, and political conflicts to last you a lifetime of fictional history. If you choose a slice-of-life romance, the focus will be more on emotional depth and character development.

There’s no right or wrong answer—just be honest with yourself. Will you stay passionate for… lets say, for about 50+ chapters?

5. What’s YOUR Unique Spin?

Here’s the best part: no one else can write exactly like you.

Even if your favorite genre is jammed with a plethora of web novels, don’t sweat it. What makes a story truly stand out is your voice, your perspective, and your fresh take.

Maybe your romance novel has a sci-fi twist.
Maybe the inspiration of your fantasy world roots in Hispanic mythology.
Maybe your thriller is told from the villain’s perspective.

There’s always room for a new, exciting take—and that’s where YOU come in.

Go With Your Gut!

At the end of the day, the best genre for you is the one you can’t stop thinking about. The one you daydream about, the one you’d love writing even if no one else read it.

So, what’s it going to be? Romance? Fantasy? Mystery? Something totally unique?

Whatever it is, see where your story takes you—just start writing. And don’t forget, let’s make magic together. ✨
